Joanne and Jim's Pacific Adventure
Card 1: Aloha...The adventure continues… after glorious days on the mountains and shores of Oahu we will sail today for points south…On our return, prepare to just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale… Jim and Joanne. — at Waikiki Beach.
Card 2: Greetings… After 5 very relaxing sea days cruising 2,598 miles southeast from Maui, including crossing the equator with Neptune’s help, we have arrived into French Polynesia for visits to Papeete, Bora Bora, and Moorea. Key words include calm seas, humid, beautiful, lush, new (people & places). Surprises include the large number of cars on Papeete and how good I’m being. No sights of Gilligan, the professor, and Maryann.
Card 3: Greetings… our adventure with people and places continues. Since leaving Bora Bora, we have visited beautiful Moorea where we took in many things, including the local choir practice (the bass kibitz there too). From there we cruised on for 4 days to arrive in New Zealand. Our first stop in Auckland included sailing on the harbor in a three mast schooner. We then went on to Bay of Islands and across to the upper west coast. At the later, we met the 2,000 year old Kauri tree, Tane Mahuta, the Lord of the Forest. Anchors are now raised and in three days we will arrive in Sydney. Throughout it all, the food continues to come on the fly as well as in the most beautiful of settings. Go Sox! (I think they have some game in New Zealand called rugby?). Cheers.
Card 4: Ausie, Ausie, Ausie, Oi, Oi, Oi. Greetings from Sydney: a spectacular multi-cultural city with great people, and lots of water, vistas, beaches, public parks, zoos, malls, dining, food, entertainment and more. Joanne and I are in frantic “hop-on-hop-off” mode experiencing lots and wishing we could do more. I’ve also had the opportunity for some great healthcare learning in a day-long meeting with New South Wales aboriginal elders, patients, family members, community members, and healthcare staff and leaders. Our hotel room, 39 floors above Sydney, provides both magnificent and sobering views. Off in the distance (an hour away) we are always able to see the smoke from the tragic Blue Mountain bush fires. Last night provided a fitting capstone to our month long Pacific adventure. We saw an extraordinary production of South Pacific at the amazing Sydney Opera House which is celebrating this week its 40th birthday. Tomorrow we begin the long journey home, arriving later in the week after a few day stop off in LA. It’s been a wonderful adventure of over 20,000 roundtrip miles with great memories (hopefully we will remember!), 1,444 of Joanne’s pictures to help those memories (and we still have days to go), and only about 174 emails in the follow-up pile. See you soon in person, on email, or in Facebook. G'day Mate
